FIA GT2 European Championship

Added on January 10, 2010 updated by Tom on February 14, 2010

The FIA GT2 European Championship emerged out of the succesful FIA GT Championship that existed since 1997. For over 12 years GT1 and GT2 cars of prestigious brands battled for the title in this mindblowing championship.

The mix of GT1 and GT2 was an attractive racing format because the differences between them can be very little. The GT1 and GT2 had separate rankings. Legendary cars were submitted to race in these championships, to give you an idea this is a short list of cars that participated: Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR, Chrysler Viper GTS-R, Porsche 911 GT3(RSR) types, Ferrari 550 Maranello, Lister Storm, Lamborghini Murciélago,Maserati Mc12 etc.

In 2009 the FIA and the SRO Motorsports Group decided to divide their 'success story' in a separate FIA GT1 World Championship and a FIA GT2 European Championship next to the already existing championships. These 'new' championships will begin in 2010.

The articles of the FIA GT Championship events which RACEmedia covered in 2008 and 2009 are still available to read.
